Carl "Tuffy" Ellingsen

Carl “Tuffy” Ellingsen was a four-sport student-athlete at Washington State from 1929-31. He wrestled, played baseball, basketball and football. He was a triple-threat halfback during the Cougars’ Rose Bowl year of 1930. Ellingsen passed up offers from MLB’s St. Louis Browns and the NFL’s Detroit Lions to enter the coaching profession. He coached seven years at Albany (Ore.) High School, finishing second in the 1935 state track meet. He worked at John Rogers High School in Spokane, Wash., 1938-71 where he spent time as a coach, athletic director and teacher. Ellingsen’s football teams won five titles in 13 years.
