Byron Bailey was a star at Washington State from 1949-51. Bailey rushed for a then-school record 695 yards in 1951 and finished his career with 1,251 yards, a Cougar record at the time. He was an All-West Coast second teamer by AP as a senior and won the J. Fred Bohler Award for inspiration. In 1952 he was drafted by Detroit and a member of the Lions’ NFL championship team that year. After playing the 1953 season with the Green Bay Packers, Bailey moved north of the border and spent 11 seasons (1954-64) with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. He rushed for 3,643 yards in eight seasons before converting to defensive back for the final-three years of his career. He was a member of the 1964 Grey Cup champion. In 1975, Bailey was inducted to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the BC Sports Hall of Fame.
