PULLMAN, Wash.- Washington State women's basketball assistant coach Shelley Sheetz has traded her business attire for a pair of sneakers, resigning her position to renew her professional playing career, Cougars' head coach Jenny Przekwas announced Thursday.
Sheetz leaves after one year at WSU to pursue a playing career in the Women's National Basketball Association. A 1995 graduate of Colorado where she was Big 8 Player of the Year as a senior, Sheetz played in the American Basketball League from 1996 until the league folded in 1998.
"I have a great opportunity to continue my playing career," Sheetz said. "I appreciate the opportunity Washington State and coach Przekwas gave me to start my coaching career. I have nothing but positive thoughts about Washington State."
Sheetz will report to the WNBA combine in Chicago April 15 and hopes to be drafted a week later. A couple of teams have contacted Sheetz already, but she declined comment as to which teams.
"We wish Shelley the best as she pursues a career in the WNBA," Przekwas said.
