Arizona Gains Revenge With 85-64 Win Over WSU

TUCSON, Ariz. - Angela Lackey and Felecity Willis combined for 38 points in
leading the Arizona Wildcats past Washington State 85-64 in a Pacific-10
Conference women's basketball game before 2,092 fans at McKale Center
Saturday evening.
Lackey led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Willis was
right behind with 18 points for the Wildcats (12-8 overall, 7-4 in Pac-10
play). Lisa Griffith added 15 points and broke the Wildcat career trey
record with four, pushing her four-year total to 191. Reshea Bristol also
hit double figures with 11 points.
Cathy McNeely, playing just her second game after missing eight contests
with a sprained knee, led the Cougars (9-11, 3-8) with 13 points, while
Victoria Harrod added 12 and Yvonne Volkman 10.
The Wildcats put the game away early in the second half, outscoring WSU
18-8 in the first seven minutes after holding a 41-31 lead at intermission.
With 13 minutes left in the game, Arizona held a 59-39 lead and they never
allowed the Cougars to get closer than 15 points. Arizona's biggest lead
came with just over a minute to play, 84-60.
After coming out of Pullman on the short end of the score in January, the
Wildcats came out much more prepared to play this time. Willis and Griffith
knocked down three-pointers on Arizona's first two shots and they never
really looked back. Julie Brase added a jumper and Elizabeth Pickney two
free throws as the host team jumped to a 10-2 lead.
In the first meeting between these two teams, WSU's Tricia Lamb lit up the
Wildcats with eight treys, including seven of eight in the opening half
when the Cougars used a 27-0 run to put the game away.
"Today we struggled running any offensive motion," Cougar coach Harold
Rhodes noted. "This team feeds off Tricia (Lamb) and when she struggles, so
does the team. It also didn't help to play without (Alke) Dietel. Not
having a 6-4 player who can handle the ball and help us go over the top of
their defense makes a difference," he said about the loss of the Pac-10's
number three scorer and number five rebounder, who had knee surgery two
weeks ago and is lost for the rest of the year.
This time Lamb was held to a season low four points and managed to hit just
two field goals in 16 attempts. She missed all six three pointers, just the
fourth time this year she has not had a trey.
The Cougars closed out the first half by outscoring Arizona 13-7, cutting a
16 point Wildcat advantage, 34-18, to 10 points at halftime. Volkman downed
a three-pointer and a free throw for a rare four-point play and McNeely hit
a trey during the run, but other than that, the Cougars didn't have much
success against the Wildcats.
WSU's recent shooting woes continued in the first half, as did the
turnovers, 11 in the opening half. From the field, the Cougars hit just
under 29 percent, while they managed just 57 percent at the free throw
line. One bright spot was WSU's rebounding, where they held a 20-19 lead.
The rebounding advantage didn't hold up for the game, however, as Arizona
ended up with a 40-36 lead. They also had two fewer turnovers than WSU's 23
and shot well, just under 51 percent. Meanwhile the Cougs hit 46 percent of
their second half shots to finish the game at 36.5 percent.
WSU will now play five of their final seven games at home, including
contests with Oregon and Oregon State next weekend.
