Cougars Squeak Out Five-Game Win Over Utah
September 4, 1998
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State volleyball, ranked 22nd in the national pre-season poll, needed five games to capture its first win of the season, defeating Utah 15-12, 15-13, 8-15, 10-15, 15-9 before 1,360 fans at Beasley Coliseum.
Senior Jennifer Stinson (Davenport, Wash.) had a career-high 30 kills with eight blocks to lead the Cougars. Senior Wendy Rouse (Reno, Nev.) also had a lifetime-best 20 kills with five blocks. Sophomore Colleen Smith (Albuquerque, NM) added a career-tying 11 kills with eight blocks. Cougar setter, senior Samantha Spink (Coeur d'Alene, ID) added 63 assists and a team-high 11 digs.
Utah's Kalani Tonga led the Utes with 24 kills and 18 digs.
In the opening match of the two-day tournament, Louisville defeated Gonzaga 15-9, 15-9, 13-15, 15-4. U of L's Sonya Gubaidulina had 17 kills and seven blocks. Gonzaga's Diane Pascua led the Bulldogs with 15 kills. GU's Britten Kimbell added 12 kills while Aimee Wilson had 11 digs and Nicole Lamoure tallied 40 assists.
Saturday's action finds Utah (1-1) meeting Louisville (1-0) at 10 a.m., WSU (1-0) taking on Gonzaga (1-1) at noon, Utah and Gonzaga playing at 5 p.m. and the Cougars against Louisville at 7 p.m.
