#16 UCLA Claims Volleyball Win At Washington State
November 13, 1998
PULLMAN, Wash. -- With three players tagging 20 or more kills, 16th-ranked
UCLA defeated Washington State 10-15, 15-4, 15-5, 15-10, in Pac-10
volleyball at Beasley Coliseum Friday night.
WSU is now 8-7 but remains in fifth-place in the Pac-10, 11-10 overall.
UCLA moves to 11-4 in conference play but stays in third place. The Bruins
are 12-10 overall.
UCLA freshman Kristee Porter led all players with 25 kills, hitting .340,
and had seven blocks. Fellow rookie Ashley Bowles added 21 kills and
served six of the Bruins' 12 aces. Redshirt-sophomore Elisabeth Bachman
tallied 20 kills, hit .486, and led all players with eight blocks.
Washington State senior Wendy Rouse had 13 kills and matched Cougar
freshman Alicia Erickson with four blocks each. Senior setter Samantha
Spink had 43 assists and tied UCLA's Chaska Potter with 14 digs apiece.
Cougar junior Joy Sperry added 12 kills and 13 digs.
The Bruins warmed up after WSU took the first game 15-10. UCLA out-blocked
WSU 12 to 8, and hit .327 for the match while the Cougs managed .196.
"I think our passing was the difference in the match," Cougar coach Cindy
Fredrick said. "They aced us 12 times and that's an outrageous number of
times to be aced. Between Kristee Porter and Ashley Bowles on the outside,
we didn't seem to be able to get a block up that could come anywhere near
them. We blocked them a couple of times but they are some amazing
freshmen. It's not a great choice between blocking an outside hitter or
Elisabeth Bachman in the middle."
After Friday night's action, the top half of the Pac-10 remained in order
with #4 Stanford beating Oregon 3-0 at Stanford, #11 USC downing Washington
3-0 in Seattle, and #19 Arizona defeating Arizona State 3-2 in Tucson.
Washington State's 1998 home season concludes with a 1:00 p.m. Sunday
matinee as the Cougars take on #11 USC. The Cougar program will say
goodbye to five seniors prior to the match.
