


WSU Rowers Sweep Gonzaga for Fawley Cup

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Washington State women's varsity eight, novice eight
and varsity four boats won their respective races Saturday to claim the
Fawley Cup over Gonzaga University in women's rowing on Long Lake near
Spokane.
The Cougars' varsity eight finished the 2,000 meter course in six minutes
and 31 seconds followed by the WSU JV 8 at 6:45, Gonzaga's varsity eight in
7:00 and GU's junior varsity boat (time not available).
In the novice eight race, WSU-A won in 6:56 followed by WSU-B in 7:05 and
Gonzaga-A in 7:12. The second novice eight race was WSU-C 7:20 and
Gonzaga-B 8:18.
Washington State continued the sweep by winning the varsity four race in a
time of 7:32, with the WSU-B boat second at 7:38 and Gonzaga last at 8:08.
"I was happy with the results today," Cougar varsity coach Tammy Crawford
said. "I hope it is indicative of the speed that we have and will continue
to get for the rest of the semester. I told the kids this is the first
step in the journey to the national championship."
The next competition for the WSU women rowers is March 27-28, at the San
Diego Crew Classic where the varsity eight, junior varsity eight and novice
eight will compete against the elite teams of collegiate women's rowing.
Selected boats will also be competing at the Husky Invitational March 27 on
Montlake Cut in Seattle.
