WSU's JV and Novice Boats Advance to Grand Finals at San Diego
March 27, 1999
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Washington State women's junior varsity eight and
novice eight crews will row in the Grand Finals at the prestigious San
Diego Crew Classic Sunday. The Cougar varsity eight boat will row in the
Petit Final (consolation).
The Cougar junior varsity eight boat finished second in the C heat of the
Saturday preliminary races for the Cloud 9 Shuttle Media Trophy. Virginia
won the C heat in a time of 6 minutes, 51.13 seconds and had the top time
of all three heats. WSU's JV clocked in at 6:58.20 on the 2,000 meter
course on San Diego's Mission Bay. The top two finishers in each heat
advanced to the Grand Final (championship) Sunday at 10:50 a.m.
WSU's novice crew finished second in their Saturday prelim heat in a time
of 7:11.19. California won the heat in 7:06.20. The top two finishers in
the first three heats and the winner of the fourth heat advanced to the
Sunday 10:30 a.m. Grand Final for the Sea World Trophy.
Washington State's varsity eight boat finished fourth in the second of the
two-heat prelims for the highly-coveted Jessop-Whittier Cup. WSU's time of
6:46.06 was the sixth fastest of the women's collegiate varsity boats
Saturday but the format permits only the top three finishers in each heat
to advance to the Grand Final. That championship race will feature
top-ranked and defending champions Washington as well as nationally-ranked
powers No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 Michigan, No. 7 USC, and No. 8 Wisconsin.
Unranked California completes the field. WSU will row in the Sunday 12:30
p.m. Petit Final against No. 10 Ohio State, Oregon State, North Carolina,
Yale and Penn.
On Montlake Cut in Seattle, the WSU varsity four finished second to
Washington's A and B boats while the Cougar second novice eight boat was
also a runner-up to the host Huskies. Only the WSU third novice eight boat
was a victor.
WSU hosts Washington in a dual regatta Saturday, April 3, at 2 p.m. at the
Cougars' home course at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.
