Cougars Claim Seven Titles at Wolf Pack Invite Track Meet

RENO, Nev. -- Four Washington State University women and three Cougar men
won their events at the Wolf Pack Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet
at Reno, Nev., Saturday.
Bernard Lagat (senior, Kenya) made his 1999 indoor debut winning the men's
800m race with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1 minute, 49.74
seconds. WSU freshman Oscar Franco-Parra (Beaverton, Ore.) captured the
men's 3,000m race in 8:49.95 with teammate Chris Charles (senior,
Bainbridge Island, Wash.) second in 8:55.38. Demetrius Murray (junior,
Tacoma) won the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.21m/49-11.
On the women's side, sophomore Megan Maynard (Langley, Wash.) won the
3,000m race in a time of 10:10.78. Whitney Evans (freshman, Calgary,
Canada) claimed the high jump at 1.77m/5-9 3/4, an inch lower than her
season-best and NCAA PQ mark. Cicely Clinkenbeard (sophomore, Okanogan,
Wash.) won the triple jump at 12.39m/40-7 3/4.
In the throws, Becky Potter (sophomore, Gig Harbor, Wash.) won the 20#
weight throw at 16.94m/55-7 with fellow Cougars Andrea Thornton (sophomore,
Shelton, Wash.) second at 15.81m/51-10 1/2 and Molly Moore (senior,
Kalispell, Mont.) sixth at 15.81m/51-10 1/2. Moore also finished seventh
in the women's shot put at 13.42m/44-0 1/2.
Other WSU women's highlights included Francesca Green Sewell (Kennewick)
and Ellannee Richardson (freshman, Gladstone, Ore.) finishing two-three in
the women's long jump while Sewell also placed sixth in the 55m dash in a
time of 7.02. Richardson was third in the 200m dash with Cougars Sharika
Higgins (junior, Oxnard, Calif.) and Randi Smith (freshman, Beverly Hills,
Calif.) fifth and sixth respectively. Alishia Booterbaugh (junior,
LaCenter, Wash.) was fifth in the 800m and freshman April Gagner (Roy,
Wash.) finished fourth in the mile. Agneta Rosenblad (sophomore, Sweden)
ran an 8.09 in the 55m hurdles prelims to advance but was disqualified in
the finals. Jeannette Martus (sophomore, Livonia, Mich) was fourth in the
invitational pole vault (3.50m/11-5 3/4) while Candice Heggie (sophomore,
Omak, Wash.) had a PR height of 3.20m/10-6 for third and Evans was fifth at
the same height.
Notable efforts for Cougar men included Arend Watkins (sophomore, San Jose,
Calif.) led all runners in the 55m hurdles prelims at 7.35 but ran a 7.69
for fifth in the finals. Chris Rushing (junior, Redmond, Wash.) third in
the high jump at 2.06m/5-9 while Craig Allen (junior, Spokane) was sixth at
2.01m/6-7. Kyllan Tower (senior, Auburn, Wash.) had a personal-best height
of 4.95m/16-2 3/4 for fifth place. Chad Swendiman (sophomore, Pullman) was
fifth in the long jump at 6.85m/22-5 3/4. B.J. Schade (junior, Sequim,
Wash.) had a PR in the 35# weight throw with his second-place 18.58m/60-11
1/2. Guillermo Macias (junior, LaPuente, Calif.) was third in the 400m
dash at 48.55. Freshman Scott Johnson (Bellevue, Wash.) finished fourth in
the mile at 4:24.12.
The next action for the WSU indoor track and field teams is Feb. 5-6 at the
Husker Invitational at Lincoln, Neb. Several Cougars will also compete at
the McDonald's II Meet at Moscow, Idaho, Feb. 6.
