WSU's Watkins Breaks Husker Invite 60m Hurdles Meet Record

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Washington State University sophomore Arend Watkins ran an
NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.80 seconds to win the finals of the
men's 60m hurdles in the second day of the 25th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker
Invite at Lincoln, Neb. Of the nearly 900 athletes from 45 schools, there
were 70 NCAA Division I qualifying marks including a dozen automatic
qualifying marks.
Watkins, an All-American hurdler from San Jose, Calif., tied the
meet-record time Friday night winning the fourth and final heat of the
men's 60m hurdles in 7.83. Watkin's Saturday time is the fifth-best in the
nation this year and a personal-best for him.
While Watkins was the lone WSU victor in the second day of the meet,
several Cougars had solid performances. Francesca Green Sewell (Kennewick)
finished second in the women's 60m dash tying her career-best time of 7.50.
Cicely Clinkenbeard (sophomore, Okanogan) was fourth in the triple jump
with a leap of 12.52m/41-4. Junior Alishia Booterbaugh (LaCenter, Wash.)
placed fifth in the 800m race in 2:10.95. In the 200m dash, Sharika
Higgins (Oxnard, Calif.) was seventh in 25.28. Agneta Roseblad (sophomore,
Sweden) and Ellannee Richardson (freshman, Gladstone, Ore.) finished sixth
and seventh respectively in the 60m hurdles. Both ran personal-best times
in the prelims Friday night with Rosenblad at 8.54 and Richardson at 8.68.
In spite of placing 14th, the women's 1600m relay of Higgins, Heidi
Abersfeller (freshman, Kennewick), Booterbaugh, and LaTroya Mucker (junior,
Los Angeles) had a season-best time of 3:57.32. The women's shot put saw
Becky Potter (sophomore, Gig Harbor) take 17th place at 13.52m/44-4 1/4 and
freshman Mandy Borschowa (Snoqualmie, Wash.) 19th with a distance of
13.42m/44-0 1/2.
For the Cougar men, freshman Anson Henry (Pickering, Ont., Canada) finished
sixth in the 60m dash in a time of 6.88. In the triple jump, Demetrius
Murray (junior, Tacoma) was sixth with a personal-best distance of
15.41m/50-6 3/4. Guillermo Macias (junior, LaPuente, Calif.) also placed
sixth but in the 400m dash.
In Friday night's action, WSU's Bernard Lagat (Kenya) won the men's 3000m
race in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8:02.55 while Francesca
Green Sewell (Kennewick) and Jeannette Martus (Livonia, Michigan) both had
NCAA PQs in the women's long jump and pole vault respectively. Sewell
leaped to 6.17m/20-3 for third place in the long jump and Martus was third
in the pole vault at 3.60m/11-9 3/4.
At the McDonald's Scoring Invitational at Moscow, Idaho, junior Lex Katich
(Keller, Wash.) grabbed WSU's sole win with a height of 4.95m/16-2 3/4 in
the men's pole vault Friday night.
Next action for the Cougar indoor track teams include the Vandal Indoor, at
the Kibbie Dome, and at the US West Collegiate Invitational at Colorado
Springs, Colo., Friday, Feb. 12.
Watkins, Lagat, Sewell and Martus Lead Track & Field at Husker Invite

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Washington State University sophomore Arend Watkins tied
the meet record and ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.83 seconds
in the preliminaries of the men's 60m hurdles in the first day of the 25th
Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invite at Lincoln, Neb. The Husker Invite
hosts the nation's premier indoor track meet this weekend with nearly 900
athletes from 45 schools, including 23 NCAA Division I institutions. Last
year's meet saw 97 Division I qualifying marks and is considered a preview
for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Watkins, an All-American hurdler from San Jose, Calif., clocked his
meet-record time winning the fourth and final heat of the men's 60m
hurdles. The finals are Saturday.
Senior Bernard Lagat (Kenya) won the men's 3000m race in an NCAA
provisional qualifying time of 8:02.55 while Francesca Green Sewell
(Kennewick) and Jeannette Martus (Livonia, Michigan) both had NCAA PQs in
the women's long jump and pole vault respectively.
Lagat, who already has an NCAA PQ time in the 800m out-kicked UTEP
sophomore Carlos Suarez for the 3k win. Sewell leaped to 6.17m/20-3 for
third place in the long jump with WSU teammates Ellannee Richardson
(freshman, Gladstone, Ore.) 12th and Agneta Rosenblad (sophomore, Sweden)
16th. Martus was third in the pole vault at 3.60m/11-9 3/4.
Other highlights for the Cougars in the first day's action included:
junior transfer Brian Laville (Regina, Sask., Canada) finished third in the
men's long jump at 7.32m/24-0 1/4; freshman Whitney Evans (Calgary,
Canada) was the high jump runner-up at 1.80m/5-10 3/4; sophomore Megan
Maynard (Langley, Wash.) finished fourth in the 5,000m race in a time of
17:07.83; B.J. Schade (junior, Sequim, Wash.) was 15th and Kevin Moore
(senior, Richland) was 16th in the men's 35# weight throw; Becky Potter
(sophomore, Gig Harbor, Wash.) finished 21st and Andrea Thornton
(sophomore, Shelton, Wash.) 26th in the women's 20# weight throw.
Other Cougar qualifiers advancing into finals competition Saturday include:
Sewell and Attrina Higgins (junior, Chino, Calif.) in the women's 60m
dash; Sharika Higgins (junior, Oxnard, Calif.) in the women's 200m dash;
Rosenblad and Richardson in the women's 60m hurdles; Alishia Booterbaugh
(junior, LaCenter, Wash.) in the women's 800m; Anson Henry (freshman,
Pickering, Ont., Canada) in the men's 60m dash; and Guillermo Macias
(junior, LaPuente, Calif.) in the men's 400m dash.
Friday's action at the McDonald's Scoring Invitational at Moscow, Idaho,
saw junior Lex Katich (Keller, Wash.) win the men's pole vault with a
height of 4.95m/16-2 3/4 for the sole WSU victory. Action continues
Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.
