PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State women's program begins its ninth
season of competition this Saturday, August 30, when the Cougars host
regional opponent Gonzaga.
The 11 a.m. PDT match, held at the Cougar Soccer Field, is sandwiched
between a packed athletic weekend for Washington State. The Cougars'
seventh-ranked volleyball team hosts the second day of the Baskin-Robbins
Cougar Challenge at Bohler Gym beginning with a 10 a.m. match vs. Wichita
State (and a 5 p.m. contest vs. Gonzaga). WSU's football team hosts Pac-10
rival UCLA in its season opener at Martin Stadium. Kick-off for the ABC
televised game is set for 12:30 p.m.
"Gonzaga has improved every year under Ric Grenell's direction and we expect
a very competitive match," said Lisa Gozley, who begins her fourth season as
Cougar head coach. "And we hope to get a better indication of where the
team is related to match play."
Gozley added, "I think we're going to have scoring punch this year with the
addition of talented newcomers like freshman Deka DeWitt and Karlie Silveira
as well as improved play by Amy Chippendale (junior) and Shalli DeWitt
(senior)."
Deka DeWitt, a freshman striker, and Shalli DeWitt, a senior center
midfielder, are the first set of sisters to ever play soccer together for
the Cougars. The pair were denied the opportunity to play together at Fife
High School (Auburn, Wash.) after a knee injury sidelined Shalli for her
senior prep year.
Washington State's soccer squad has dominated the all-time series with
Gonzaga. The Cougars have won all ten meetings and have outscored the
Bulldogs by a lopsided 64-3 margin. The Cougars finished the 1996 season
with an 8-7-2 overall record, including a 3-4-0 Pacific-10 Conference mark.
