PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State women's soccer team (1-2-0 overall)
meets its second straight top 25 opponent Friday, Sept. 12 as the Cougars
host the Broncos of Santa Clara.
The match, held at the Cougar Soccer Field, is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. PDT.
The Broncos come to Pullman ranked No. 6 in last week's Soccer America poll.
Santa Clara (2-0-0) starts the week at the University of Washington (0-2-0)
Sept.10.
Although Washington State has never beat the Broncos, the Cougars have had
their share of competitive matches with one of the top soccer programs in
the country.
A year ago, the Cougars battled host Santa Clara to a 1-1 draw at Buck Shaw
Stadium, site of the 1996 NCAA Final Four. The Broncos advanced to the
Final Four where they lost in the semifinals eventual national champion
North Carolina 2-1.
The two meetings in Pullman have proved to be very entertaining contests.
WSU suffered a 1-0 home loss during the 1995 season. In 1993, the Cougars
took a quick 2-0 advantage before Santa Clara clawed back to escape with a
3-2 win.
Last week the Cougars dropped a pair of matches in Minneapolis, losing to
the University of Detroit 4-0 and to 25th-ranked Minnesota 3-2. Junior
forward Amy Chippendale scored both goals in the loss to the Golden Gophers
in the second half.
Three Dot Notes - Last season the Cougars finished with a 2-2-1 record vs.
ranked opponents with the draw coming at Santa Clara (1-1) and victories
over California (1-0) and San Diego State (2-1...Amy Chippendale earned the
second multiple-goal match of her career with two goals vs. No. 25
Minnesota...her first came in 1995 at Arizona...freshman Shannon Wilson
ranks fifth among goalkeepers in the West region with 17 saves...the Cougars
have used a different starting lineup in each of the first three matches.
