Baseball Drops 12th Straight Pac-10 Contest
Cougars fall to Bruins, 15-8.

WESTWOOD, Calif. - UCLA leadoff hitter Jack Santora went 4-for-4 at the
plate with a home run, a double, and four runs scored as the Bruins handed
the Washington State baseball team a 15-8 Pacific-10 Conference loss
Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Memorial Stadium.
The Cougars fell to 18-21 overall and are now 1-13 in Pac-10 play while
dropping 12 straight. The Bruins are headed in the opposite direction as
WSU winning eight of their last 10 games and six consecutive in league
play. With the win UCLA improved to 23-24 and evened its mark in the
Pac-10 at 7-7.
UCLA freshman phenom Josh Karp (Bothell, Wash.) picked up the win on the
mound giving up three earned runs and only four hits in six and a third
innings of work. The right hander struck out five and is now 6-3 in 1999.
WSU starter Jamaal Gaines fell to 2-4 on the season giving up 10 runs off
11 Bruin hits in just over five innings. Sean Donlin, Les McTavish, and
Matt O'Brien also saw mound duty for the Cougs out of the bullpen.
WSU took an early 1-0 lead after its half of the first inning when Ray
Hattenburg (Spokane, Wash.) extended his hitting streak to nine games with
a single scoring Shawn Stevenson (Everett, Wash.)
UCLA scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. A
five-run third inning pushed the Bruins' lead to 8-1 and three more put
UCLA ahead by 10 runs. Santora capped the five-run third with a two-run
home run over the right-center field fence for his fourth long ball of the
year.
In the sixth Bill Scott and Garrett Atkins hit back-to-back home runs off
Gaines and Donlin. Scott finished the game 1-for-3 with three runs scored
and now has 16 home runs in 1999. Atkins was 4-for-5 at the plate and
extended his current hitting streak to 13 games. The Bruins tied their
season highs with 15 runs and 17 hits.
WSU did not score again after the first until putting up four runs in the
seventh frame. Freshman Evan Hecker (Seattle, Wash.) recorded a
run-scoring single as did senior Steve Gleason (Spokane, Wash.). In the
eighth the Cougs tallied three more runs with Jason Grove's 11th home run
of the year putting two runs on the board. Stevenson finished the game
2-for-4 while starting in his 66th consecutive game at shortstop and
Hattenburg was 2-for-4.
WSU and UCLA will square off in the final game of the three-game series
Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Cougars will be looking to end its 12-game
Pac-10 skid and its fourth consecutive series sweep. Hard-throwing junior
Reggie Rivard (Bonnyville, Alberta) will get the start for the Cougs with a
UCLA starter not yet announced.
