Women's Rowing Has Big First Day at Cougar Invite
Cougars defeat Stanford and UC Davis.
April 12, 1999
WAWAWAI LANDING, Wash. - The Washington State women's rowing team defeated
Stanford in a varsity eight race and UC Davis in a novice eight race in the
first day's action of the Cougar Invitational Regatta at the Cougars home
course at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.
Because of gusty winds and whitecaps at the starting point Friday
afternoon, the race course was shortened from 2,000 meters to 1,500 meters.
The final event of the day, the varsity four race between Stanford and
WSU, was postponed until Saturday in hopes of better water conditions.
In varsity eight action, the 11th-ranked Cougars defeated Stanford by 11
seconds while UC Davis nipped Kansas State by just four seconds.
Racing continues in two sections Saturday beginning with two novice eight
and two varsity eight races beginning at 8 a.m. Racing resumes in the
afternoon at 4 p.m. with eight events scheduled through 5:30 p.m. The
Saturday afternoon events are part of "The Day at the River" sponsored by
the Cougar Athletics Marketing and Promotions Department: in addition to
the rowing action on the river, spectators will be invited to enter
land-based contests for prizes, and dinner will be available for purchase
for $6 per person.
