Saturday Marks 84th Anniversary of First Dad's Weekend Game

When the Cougars face Arizona Saturday at Martin Stadium, it will mark the annual Dad's Weekend football game.

It will also mark the 84th anniversary, to the day, of the first Washington State Dad's Weekend game.

The Cougars hosted Montana, Saturday, Oct. 25, 1930, at Rogers Field. Below is the cover and first page of the gameday program. Note the message by Randall Henry that includes this passage:

"We hope that it will become a permanent annual event, a cherished tradition of the State College of Washington."

The Cougars dominated Montana 61-0. In addition to the game, The Daily Evergreen gave a recap of the Dad's Weekend activities.

It was believed 200 fathers would come for the weekend. It turned out to be 400. Below is the front page of that issue.

It was the final home game of the season for the Cougars, a season that ended with a 9-0 regular season record and a berth to the Rose Bowl.

Go Cougs!
