Dawgs Down WSU In Volleyball 3-2

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The host Washington Huskies claimed their first Pac-10 win and only second victory of the season with a 11-15, 17-15, 10-15, 15-0, 15-9 win over Washington State Friday night at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on the Washington campus.

Washington State is now 1-2 in Pac-10, 4-5 overall while Washington is 1-2 in conference, 2-5 overall.

Washington senior Leslie Tuiasosopo had a triple-double with career highs of 31 kills and 13 blocks plus 11 digs. Kristina Laffling added 18 kills and a match-high 19 digs for the Huskies. UW out-blocked WSU 21-12.

WSU senior Jennifer Stinson led the Cougs with 22 kills and six blocks while senior Wendy Rouse tailled 15 kills and 15 digs.

WSU led the first game from a 2-2 score on, hitting .362 with 21 kills and only four errors. Spink and Smith had three blocks each while Rouse and Stinson had seven kills each with no errors. Husky Tuiasosopo had 11 kills and three blocks but the Cougars took game one 15-11.

Washington ran up an 11-4 lead in game two but the Cougars fought back to close the gap 11-8. Tuiasosopo in the front row moved UW to a 14-8 lead but the Cougs weren't ready to throw in the towel. Two blocks and two kills by Stinson, three UW hitting errors and a Spink service ace put WSU up 15-14. Kills by UW's Tamara VanEngelen and Allison Richardson tied the game at 15 followed by a Van Engelen service error to give WSU the sideout. Three consecutive kills by Laffling gave the Huskies a 17-15 win in game two.

The Cougars ran up a 10-5 lead in the third game with the Huskies only coming as close as 10-12 before kills by Smith and Spink, blocks by Rouse, Erickson and Stinson and a kill by Stinson gave WSU the game 15-10.

Huskies grabbed the momentum back with a quick 15-0 win in the fourth game as the Cougars only managed three kills with ten errors for -.389 hitting percentage.

The rally-scoring fifth game saw UW score six to WSU's two before three Husky hitting errors brought the Cougs within one at 5-6. Laffling then took over with strong net play to put UW in control 11-5 before Smith scored a point for WSU. But the game and match went to the Dawgs, 15-9.

Washington State travels to the San Francisco Bay area next weekend to play Stanford Friday, Oct. 2 and California Oct. 4.
