#5 Stanford Sweeps Washington State In Volleyball November 1, 1998 PULLMAN, Wash. -- Pacific-10 Conference leader and fifth-ranked Stanford defeated Washington State in volleyball Sunday afternoon 15-10, 15-12, 15-9, before 1,055 fans in Beasley Coliseum. Washington State is now 6-6 in the Pac-10, 9-9 overall. Stanford is 13-0 in conference action and 19-2 overall. Stanford sophomore Jennifer Detmer led all players with 13 kills while Kerri Walsh had a match-high 19 digs. Both Walsh and Michelle Chambers had six blocks. Sara Sandrik had 11 kills and five blocks. The Cougars were led by the 12 kills and 12 digs of freshman Missy Blackshire. Senior Wendy Rouse also tagged 12 kills and had five blocks. Sophomore Colleen Smith contributed five blocks to the WSU cause. Stanford out-blocked Washington State 14 to nine. In the first game, WSU was down 10-9 but couldn't stop the Cardinal front row attack and managed only one more point, a kill by freshman Kristen Johnson, before Stanford won 15-10. WSU had a 9-5 lead in the second game before Stanford knotted the game at 11. Tied again at 12, hitting errors by Smith and Blackshire allowed the Cardinal to take game two 15-12. The Cougars were in reach for much of the third game, trailing 9-8 until Stanford capitalized on WSU's -.028 hitting percentage and won the game 15-9, and the match 3-0. "We had every opportunity to win this match but we let it go," Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick said. "I think we weren't very selective. We weren't very sharp on where we were setting the ball. Stanford is very patient, they just kept chipping away. They never panicked." Washington State travels to Oregon to play the Oregon Ducks Friday night in Eugene and the Oregon State Beavers Sunday afternoon in Corvallis. #5 Stanford (13-0, 19-2) d.
