UCLA Sweeps WSU Volleyball

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The UCLA Bruins, on a four-match win streak, defeated the Washington State Cougars in Pacific-10 Conference volleyball Sunday 15-8, 16-14, 15-9 before 594 fans in Pauley Pavilion.

Washington State is now 5-4 in Pac-10, 8-7 overall. UCLA's record is 6-3 in conference action, 7-9 overall.

With 16 kills Sunday, senior Jennifer Stinson became the seventh player in WSU history to have 1,000 career kills. Her four-year total is now 1,006. She was the only Coug in double-figure kills Sunday. Wendy Rouse and Joy Sperry each had 11 digs and Alicia Erickson led WSU with five blocks.

UCLA freshman Kristee Porter had a match-high 20 kills with Elisabeth Bachman contributing 16. Ashley Bowles had 12 digs. Bachman and Amy Nihipali each had five blocks.

UCLA took an 8-7 game one lead and reeled off four consecutive points to take an 12-7 advantage. Sperry had a kill for WSU's eighth point but two Cougar errors and kills by UCLA's Bowles and Nihipali gave the Bruins the 15-8 win.

In the second game, WSU claimed a 10-6 lead but watched it melt away as the Bruins tagged four straight kills for an 11-10 lead. The game was tied up with a net call on UCLA and the teams tied again at 12 and 13 points. Stinson's next kill put the Cougs at game point 14-13 but Kristee Porter's hit gave UCLA the sideout. Wendy Rouse returned the favor with a kill but again Porter got the sideout for the Bruins. Bowles' kill tied the game at 14 and a hitting error by Cougar Sperry put UCLA up 15-14. Bachman scored the final UCLA kill and gave the home team a 16-14 win and a two-game lead in the match.

The third game was closely played with the score tied or within two points from the start with WSU taking a 9-8 lead. But the Bruins stopped the Cougar attack, scoring the final six points. Nihipali had five kills and Porter had two aces to give UCLA a 15-9 win and a three-zero sweep.

"We looked as bad today as we looked good on Friday night," Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick said referring to her team's 3-1 upset win over #8 USC Oct. 16.

Washington State hosts cross-state rival Washington at Beasley Coliseum Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m.
