PULLMAN, Wash. (April 9, 2026) – Washington State starter Nick Lewis worked eight innings and Ryan Skjonsby drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth for a 3-2 victory over Gardner-Webb University at Bailey-Brayton Field Thursday afternoon.
Lewis set a career-high with eight innings and allowed two runs, just one earned to earn the win, his fourth win in his last five starts. Dustin Robinson had three hits with a homer, a pair of doubles and two runs scored while Skjonsby had two hits including the go-ahead RBI-single through the right side to score Robinson who had doubled the previous pitch.
August Richie retired GWU in order in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
The Cougars, coming off a 7-6 win over seventh-ranked Oregon State Tuesday, improved to 16-17 overall while the Bulldogs dropped to 16-18.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Robinson gave the Cougars an early lead with an opposite-field solo homer off the scoreboard in left-centerfield. Lewis cruised through the first four innings before GWU used a pair of two-out hits to tie the game at one on an RBI-single.
The Cougars answered right back as Kyler Northrop tripled to right-centerfield to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored after the next hitter Gavin Roy punched an RBI-single the other way down the right field line.
GWU put runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth but Lewis ended the threat with a groundout to second. The Bulldogs put a runner on third in the seventh and tied the game after a Cougar miscue allowed a run to score
Lewis received a big play from his defense in the eighth as shortstop Northrop fielded a middle behind second base, flipped to Roy covering at second who fired to first for the inning-ending double play.
In the bottom of the inning, Robinson went the other way for his third hit of the day, a two-out double down the left field line and scored as Skjonsby pulled the next pitch through the right side for the go-ahead RBI-single.
