Washington State Closes out Series Sweep of Gardner-Webb

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 11, 2026) – Washington State closed out a series sweep of Gardner-Webb with a 5-3 victory at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars, who went 4-1 last week and are winners in six of their last seven, improved to 18-17 overall and notch their third series win in the last four weekend. Gardner-Webb dropped to 16-20 overall.

Senior starter Luke Meyers earned the win after going six innings and allowed just three unearned runs in the first inning before posting five straight scoreless frames. Cougar relievers Erik Rodriguez worked a scoreless seventh and August Richie posted scoreless eighth and ninth to earn his fourth save.

Four Cougar hitters recorded multiple-hit games led by leadoff hitter Trevor Smith who doubled, homered and scored three times while Max Hartman had a pair of hits, his team-leading 12th stolen base and two RBI including the go-ahead RBI-single in the sixth inning that broke a 3-3 tie. Gavin Roy and Dustin Robinson each added two hits.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Gardner-Webb took advantage of a first-inning Cougar miscue that extended the inning and GWU later hit a three-run home run for a 3-0 advantage. WSU chipped away with a Max Hartman sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the inning and Skjonsby pulled an RBI-single through the right side to make it a one-run game in the third inning.

In the fourth, Smith launched a one-out no-doubt solo homer to left field to tie the game at three, notch his first career homer at Bailey-Brayton Field and second of his career.

Meyers settled in after the first inning and closed his day with five-straight scoreless frames, stranding a runner on third to end the sixth inning.

In the sixth, Smith worked a two-out walk, Roy followed with a bunt single to third base for his second bunt hit of the day and Hartman followed with an RBI-single through the right side on the first pitch he saw for the lead.

Rodriguez used a 6-4-3 double to post a scoreless seventh before Northrop singled home Dustin Robinson with two outs in the seventh for a two-run lead. Richie worked around leadoff singles to post scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the save.
