Cougar Bats Back Smith, WSU Beats Gardner-Webb 7-4

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 10, 2026) – Ryan Skjonsby homered and Cam Macleod drove in two runs in Washington State's 7-4 victory over Gardner-Webb at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday afternoon.

The Cougars (17-17) received two-hit games from Max Hartman, Skjonsby and Macleod to support starter Griffin Smith who worked six innings and Scott Rienguette recorded the final four outs for his fourth save. Skjonsby also scored twice while Hartman and Dane Chavez each stole a base, and Kyler Northrop doubled and scored a run. Smith earned the win to improve to 3-3 after allowing three earned runs and scattered five hits over six innings.

WSU scored in three-straight innings, twice in the third, twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth to build a 7-2 lead. Gardner-Webb (16-19) scored in the fourth-straight innings but the Cougar bullpen posted scoreless eighth and ninth innings to preserve the win and clinch WSU third series win in the last four weekends.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Cam Macleod lined an opposite-field single through the right side and Kyler Northrop followed with a double to left field before Macleod came home on Trevor Smith's sacrifice fly to left field and Northrop scored on Gavin Roy's sacrifice fly to centerfield.

GWU led off the fourth with a solo homer to right-centerfield but the Cougars answered right back with two more runs. Skjonsby lined a single back up the middle and Dane Chavez pulled a two-strike pitch through the right side. Chavez later stole third before Macleod muscled a single into shallow centerfield to score Skjonsby and Chavez dove around the tag at the plate to make it 4-1.

In the fifth, the Cougars put a pair of runners on after back-to-back two-out walks before Skjonsby launched a three-run homer deep to right field for a no-doubter.

GW continued to hang around with solo homers in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to cut the Cougar lead to 7-4.

Rienguette came in with a runner on third in the eighth and ended the inning with a fly out to right field before posting a scoreless ninth for the save.
