Priest Caps Cougar Comebacks, WSU Beats Grand Canyon in 10

PULLMAN, Wash. (March 21, 2026) – Matt Priest hustled down the first base line to beat out an game-winning walkoff RBI-fielder's choice to beat Grand Canyon 6-5 in 10 innings at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (9-12, 3-2 Mountain West) rallied to tie the game in three straight innings, scoring once in the eighth to tie things at three, scored once in the ninth to tie things at four and scored twice in the tenth to clinch the series from Grand Canyon (8-16, 0-2 Mountain West).

Gavin Roy, Max Hartman, Mason Pirello and Ryan Skjonsby each recorded two hits while starter Griffin Smith worked into the seventh inning and allowed just one earned run.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Hartman's RBI-infield single in the third inning gave WSU a 1-0 lead and both teams traded runs in the fifth before GCU took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the seventh.

Ryan Skjonsby tied the game in the eighth with an RBI-single through the right side but GCU retook the lead with a solo homer to lead off the ninth. WSU put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the ninth before Noah Thein brought home the tying run with a safety squeeze bunt to score Roy.

Grand Canyon took a 5-4 lead after a bases-loaded walk in the tenth but Cougars answered as Skjonsby singled back up the middle to start the inning, Cam Macleod reached on a GCU infield bobble and Kyler Northrop beat out an infield bunt single to load the bases. Roy brought in Skjonsby with a sacrifice fly to right field as Macleod moved up to third on the play. Priest followed with a ground ball to second who flipped to second base to try to turn the double play but Priest beat the throw at first as the Macleod scored the game-winner.
