Balanced Attack Leads Cougars Past Cal Poly, 8-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (February 22, 2026) – Gavin Roy had three hits and drove in three runs as Washington State beat Cal Poly 8-3 at Baggett Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars collected 11 hits used a three-run third and four-run eighth to back starter Griffin Smith who worked six innings to earn the win. Max Hartman and Ryan Skjonsby each recorded  two hits, doubled and drove in two runs while leadoff man Trevor Smith reached back three times, had an RBI-bunt single, walked, was hit by a pitch and scored a run.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
The Cougars struck for three runs in the third inning as Luke Thiele led off with a single to right-centerfield, was bunted to second and scored on Gavin Roy's opposite-field RBI-single through the right side for a 1-0 lead. Trevor Smith later worked a work before Hartman drove a two-run double the other way off the left field wall to score Roy and Smith for a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cal Poly used three hits to plate two runs and cut the Cougar lead to 3-2. WSU answered back with Skjonsby's RBI-double over the centerfielder's head in the sixth and Smith ended a threat with a 6-4-3 double play in the bottom of the inning.

The Mustangs added a run in the seventh to make it 4-3 but the Cougars erupted for four runs in the eighth inning. Hartman singled to left, Dustin Robinson was hit by a pitch and Dane Chavez followed with a sacrifice bunt. Skjonsby delivered an RBI-single to left before Roy singled a single up the middle to score two more. The final run of the inning came on Trevor Smith's bunt single, WSU's third bunt of the inning, as Noah Thein scored on a play.

Taber Fast worked the seventh and eighth innings before August Richie closed things out with a perfect ninth inning.
