Ben Borgida shot a 2-over, 73, to lead Washington State during the first round at The Prestige, played Monday on the par 71, 7,105-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West.
The Cougars finished the first day with a 13-over, 297, leaving them in 18th place in the 24-team field. Only three teams managed to break par on the day, with Oregon State going out early in the morning before conditions worsened throughout the day, posting a 9-under, 275. They sit seven strokes ahead of Oregon (-2, 282) and eight in front of UNC-Wilmington (-1, 283).
Starting on the front side, Borgida made the turn at even par following two birdies and two bogeys. A double bogey on 10 along with another birdie and bogey left him 2-over, 73, tied for 42nd overall. Freshman
Dylan Boenning and sophomore
Dylan Burcham each finished their first round with matching 3-over-par, 74s, which placed them in a tie for 56th. Boenning posted two birdies on his round while Burcham recorded three.
Senior
Sam Renner completed Monday with a 5-over, 76, tied for 86th after 18 holes. Renner managed just three birdies on the round, the last coming on the par 5, 16th. Freshman
Christian Flick started his round with a birdie but managed just one more the rest of the way as he finished his first round at 10-over, 81, tied for 111th.
Sophomore
Garrett Harrison, playing the individual tournament at the Golf Course at Terra Lago in nearby Indio, posted a 2-over, 74, a round that included three birdies on the front side.
Play continues at The Prestige Tuesday morning. The Cougars are scheduled to tee off beginning at 7:40 a.m. off the back nine.
