PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women’s soccer team opened conference play in the new Pac-12 against Oregon State with a 3-1 win, Thursday night at Lower Soccer Fied. Freshman Delaney Hawkins scores a brace in the first seven minutes of the match. Riley Carolan scored her first goal as a Cougar from a set piece in the 27th minute, and the Cougs extended their unbeaten streak against the Beavers to nine matches.
Hawkins’ first goal had her running down the right side of the field and slotting it in past Oregon State’s keeper with her right foot in the third minute of the match. Emma Widmor had the assist playing the through ball down the line for Hawkins, Widmor’s third assist of the season.
Shortly after her first goal, Hawkins netted the second goal coming from another through ball, this time from Kingston Worke and Calli Holje, to score again with her right foot in the seventh minute. Hawkins became the first Coug to record a multi-goal match, while Worke and Holje each earned their first career assist.
The Cougs’ third goal came from a set piece in the 27th minute. Ashlyn Sandow took the corner kick and Riley Carolan scored a header into the left side-netting, for 3-0. The header found its way through traffic and gave Sandow her first Cougar assist.
In the second half, the Beavers got one goal back, catching the Cougs flat-footed with a shot off the cross bar. OSU’s London Tsuma jumped on the rebound, tapping it in the back of the net in the 79th minute.
The Cougs edged out the Beavers with 53 percent of the possession. The Cougs had 20 shots compared to Oregon State’s 17. The Beavers had eight saves with WSU’s Ashlyn Dvorak made three saves. This was the most goals the Cougs have scored against Oregon State since October 31, 2021, which ended with a 3-2 overtime victory.
Washington State returns to pitch Sunday, October 4 to host Fresno State in the weekend’s matinee conclusion. The Cougars and Bulldogs are scheduled to kick off at noon from Lower Soccer Field with coverage on the Pac-12 YouTube channel.
