SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington State soccer team dropped a 2-0 defeat to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Saturday night, at Luger Field in Spokane. Gonzaga scored a goal in each half to move to 2-2 and pull even with the Cougars in Pac-12 Conference standings.

The Zags scored the opening goal from a corner kick in the 33rd minute. WSU’s goalkeeper Ashlyn Dvorak denied the initial attack diving left to parry a 1-on-1 chance wide of her goal in the buildup. The Bulldogs found the back of the net from the set piece and held the lead into halftime.

WSU’s Camille Brophy delivered the Cougars first-half shot on goal in the 37th minute, turning at the top of the area and driving a shot to the bottom middle of the net and forcing the Gonzaga save. Entering the second half, the Cougars appeared to earn an early penalty kick, but after video review the call was reversed and Wazzu remained down by the first-half goal.

Under 10 minutes later, Gonzaga found its insurance goal, delivering just its third win against Washington State in 29 meetings. WSU’s backline and Dvorak were pressed forward for a Cougar set piece and found themselves caught off their line. Despite Dvorak’s attempt at playing sweeper keeper and making the first clearance, the Zags found the ball and the back of the net on the second ball.

The Cougars had 12 shots compared to GU’s 17 shots with three of WSU shots on target, while the Zags put seven attempts on frame. Dvorak made five saves in the match, her sixth match with 5+ saves and third-straight match with five saves. WSU fell to 24-3-2 all-time against Gonzaga with all three losses in Spokane.

Washington State continues its season with its final home stand of the regular season next week at Lower Soccer Field. The Cougars will host San Diego State, Thursday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. for Kick or Treat. WSU will honor its seniors Sunday, Oct. 25 against Texas State at 1 p.m. Both matches will stream live on the Pac-12 YouTube channel.
