PULLMAN, Wash. – WSU women’s soccer senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Dvorak was named the Pac-12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Cougars’ 2-1 win over Seattle U last Wednesday, the Conference announced Tuesday.
Dvorak, a co-captain made a career-high 13 saves in the victory, extending the Wazzu unbeaten streak to three matches. The Montana native made the most saves by a Cougar keeper in six seasons, including 10 first-half saves to keep the score level into halftime. Dvorak’s save tally also matches the sixth-most saves in WSU soccer single-game history.
WSU held less possession than SU, enduring a season-high 14 shots on target by a Cougar opponent. The Wazzu defense held until the halftime whistle, facing 11 first half shots on target before regrouping with Dvorak at the break and limiting the Redhawks to just three strikes on target in the final 45 minutes.
Last week, Dvorak helped secure a road draw at Cal State Fullerton, including stopping a penalty attempt, her first as a Coug. At the time, Dvorak matched her then-career-high nine saves and became the first WSU GK to save a PK in three seasons.
The Cougars are beginning a two-week rest before beginning Pac-12 Conference play. The revitalized Pac-12 begins at the start of October with WSU welcoming long-time foe Oregon State to Lower Soccer Field, Thursday, October 1, for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
