FULLERTON, Calif. – The Washington State women’s soccer team came from behind to draw Cal State Fullerton, 1-1, Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium. After going down in the 11th minute, WSU senior Reagan Brisendine equalized with her first Cougar goal in the 27th minute. Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Dvorak made a WSU career-high nine saves, including a penalty save in the 51st minute, to secure the road result.
“A solid road result against a very good Fullerton squad,” WSU Head Coach Chris Citowicki said. “Once again we defended brilliantly, but also created solid chances in the other direction, too. I was happy with the goal and what we produced. I just wish we could have put another one away.”
The Titans scored just over 10 minutes into the match, running down a ball on the right side near the endline. The cross bounced into the 6-yard box to the foot of Cal State Fullerton’s Sail Bozinovic and the tap-in.
WSU responded, playing quickly out of the back line and through the midfield to open up play. The quick action allowed freshman Delaney Hawkins to run on to a through ball in the 18th minute. Hawkins appeared to have her defender beat and went down at the top of the goalbox under contact, but the official signaled play-on.
Just before Wazzu’s goal, forward Lexi Lee found space in the 6-yard box after a well-timed run from the midfield. The Texas senior played a square ball into the box, but just behind a running Hawkins, who put a toe on it before the save. The Cougars had seven shots on target, matching a season-high.
Lee delivered the equalizing pass moments later, playing Brisendine to the left post at the 6-yard box. Brisendine spun her defender around and fought for possession and position to score past the diving Fullerton goalkeeper. The Montana co-captain slotted a left-footed shot between the goalkeeper’s legs and into the side netting at the far post for her first Cougar goal and sixth career goal.
WSU’s defense stepped up after the Cougars’ goal, withstanding 23 shots, including a season-high 10 shots on frame. Just after halftime, Dvorak was called upon for a penalty save when video review determined a penalty from a Coug tackle. The co-captain dove left, making the save at shoulder-height; then recovered and saved a second shot that was recycled in. Dvorak’s PK save marked the first by a Cougar ‘keeper since Nadia Cooper stopped a penalty, Sept. 1, 2024.
“A huge amount of praise towards Ashlyn Dvorak,” Citowicki added, “who once again proved she’s one of the top goalkeepers in the nation.”
Washington State has a quick turnaround, traveling home to host Seattle U, Wednesday, September 13, at 6 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field. The match will stream live on the Pac-12 YouTube channel.
