PULLMAN, Wash. (Sept. 11, 2026) – The Washington State tennis team concluded its first day of the season and the Cougar Classic against Montana, Portland, and Idaho, at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, Friday.
Freshmen Clara Shön and Gabriella Harper both played their first matches with the WSU Cougar Tennis team. The Cougars began the day in doubles action with wins over Montana. Junior Chisato Kanemaki and freshman Clara Schön won their match 7-5 against Montana. Sophomore Ava-Monet Sycamore and freshman Gabriella Harper won their match against the Griz, 6-2.
The Cougars returned to the courts in the afternoon for singles play against Portland. Yura Nakagawa and Harper both took down their Portland opponents in 6-3 and 6-2 wins, respectively. Kanemaki battled through a three-set match against Portland, taking the opening set before ultimately falling in a hard-fought contest.
Play continues Saturday at the Cougar Classic with day two action to be held at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Play begins at 10 a.m. with doubles action before continuing to singles play in the afternoon.
