PULLMAN, Wash. (Sept. 26, 2025) – Sophomore Martina Puvill captured a straight-set victory to highlight the first day of play at the 2025 Cougar Classic, played Friday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
 
WSU's day began with doubles where WSU's pair of Puvill and Zali Morris pushed their match against Rose Hayes and Brooke Bittner from Gonzaga to a tiebreaker before the Bulldog duo escaped with an 8-7 (7-5) victory. In singles action, Puvill had no problem with Hayes, winning 6-1, 6-1, while Bittner came away with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Morris to give Gonzaga to 2-1 win over WSU in the team bracket.
 
In the mini dual format, teams of two play one doubles and two singles matches, with the team with more victories advances in the team draw.
 
Play continues at the Cougar Classic Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
