BELLEVUE, Wash. (May 6, 2025) – Washington State dropped a 6-4 nonconference contest to Seattle U at Bannerwood Ballpark Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings but a couple nice defensive plays by the Redhawks ended the threats. Washington State built a 3-0 lead after three innings before Seattle U took the lead with a grand slam in the fourth inning.

WSU received three hits from
Will Cresswell and two hits including a two-run home run from
Jonah Shull while
Jack Weise delivered two hits off the bench. The Cougars combined to leave 12 runners on base.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
WSU jumped out to an early lead in the second after
Luke Thiele worked a leadoff walk before Shull launched a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homer. The Cougars added a run in the third on
Ryan Skjonsby's run-scoring sacrifice fly to left field to score Cresswell.

In the fourth, WSU left a pair of runners on to end the inning before the Redhawks struck in the bottom of the inning. Seattle U used a pair of walks and a single to load the bases before a grand slam on the first pitch gave the Redhawks a 4-3 lead.

The Cougars put two runners on in the sixth but Seattle U ended the threat with a 4-6-3 double play.

In the eighth, Shull led off the inning with single through the left side and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Redhawk lead to 5-4 with one out. Roy reached with a one-out infield single and moved to second on the run-scoring wild pitch but he was stranded as the tying run after a diving stop by the shortstop who knocked down a ball hit up the middle and fired to first for the third out.

In the ninth, Thiele lined a two-out single into centerfield and Skjonsby came up as the tying run and drove a pitch deep to centerfield that the Seattle U centerfield made the game-ending catch as he crashed into the wall.
