Kurui Earns Eugene Bid; Cougs Advance in Four Events

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –The 2025 NCAA Division-I Outdoor Track & Field West First Rounds began, Wednesday, at E.B. Cushing Stadium on the Texas A&M campus with the Washington State men's track and field team advancing to three NCAA quarterfinals and sophomore Evans Kurui punching his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 10,000-meter run.
 
In the men's 100-meter dash, junior Mason Lawyer raced his way to Friday's quarterfinals with a 10.32 mark, qualifying with the ninth-fastest time of the first-round heats. Junior Bryson Stubblefield raced in the opening heat to a 10.53 time, finishing 30th overall. Lawyer returned to compete in the 200-meter dash, where he previously qualified as a freshman. Lawyer clocked a 20.79, finishing second in his heat to earn an automatic spot in the quarterfinals Friday evening.

Junior John Paredes clocked a qualifying time of 13.72, 18th overall, in the 110-meter hurdles to earn a spot in Friday's quarterfinal sprints. Paredes advances to the event quarterfinals for a second-straight season with his second-fastest sprint of the spring. Fellow junior Parker Duskin just missed qualification for the next round, finishing 25th overall in 13.84 seconds during his first trip to the NCAA First Round.
 
Returning to the NCAA First Round for a second-consecutive season, junior Blake Sturgis threw the second-best javelin mark of his career at 67.92 meters. Sturgis finished 15th in the 48-competitor event, improving on his 32nd-place finish from one season ago. Freshman Evan Berg also qualified in the javelin throw during his first season, finishing 36th with a 61.47-meter mark.
 
Sophomore Grant Buckmiller returned to the 400-meter first round, competing in the fourth heat. Buckmiller finished in 47.27, concluding his second season as a Coug.
 
In the evening's final event, Evans Kurui finished fifth in the 10,000-meter semifinal to earn his qualification for the NCAA Finals next month. Kurui crossed the finish line in 28:19.22, ahead of teammate junior Josphat Meli. The junior finished 34th with a time of 29:36.63.
 
The 2025 NCAA West First Round continues tomorrow, Thursday, May 29, with the opening day of women's competition. Twelve Cougar women will compete at E.B. Cushing Stadium with field events beginning at 8 a.m. PT and track events starting at 4 p.m. PT with live coverage on ESPN+.
