Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif (April 25, 2025) – The University of Sad Diego captured the opening doubles point then rode that momentum to three singles victory en route to a 4-2 win over Washington State in a 2025 West Coast Conference Championship semifinal match Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
 
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 17-8 on the season. San Diego improves to 11-9.
 
In doubles play to begin the day, the Cougars struck first as the No. 3 duo of Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov posted a 6-0 win over Gabby Gregg and Anni Pulls. It marked the eighth-straight win for the WSU pair. San Diego evened the match when Hannah Read and Kristina Nordiykan defeated WSU's Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki, 6-2, at No. 2, pushing the deciding match to Court 1. There, San Diego's Claudia de las Heres and Kailey Evans, ranked NO. 52 nationally, captured a late break of serve to defeat No. 49 Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy, 6-4, giving the Toreros the opening doubles point.
 
In singles play, San Diego pushed the lead to 2-0 as Read defeated Abouelsaad, 6-0, 6-3, at No 4. Tse cut the lead in half with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nordikyan at No. 3, as the remaining four matches all moved to a third set.
 
At No. 6, Gregg pushed San Diego to within one win from victory as she defeated Markov, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 just before Kanemaki completed a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win over Pulls at No. 5, making it a 3-2 Torero lead.
 
At No. 2, Alvarez Sande battled from a set down to force a third, but she couldn't recover from an early break of serve as Evans clinched the team win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win. The match on Court 1 was abandoned with de las Heres leading Murphy, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 2-1.
 
The Cougars will find out their postseason possibilities next week when the NCAA Selection Show takes place Monday at 2 p.m. PT.
