Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. (April 24, 2025) -- Number 3-seed Washington State Tennis posted a 4-0 victory over No. 6 Portland in a West Coast Conference Championship quarterfinal match Thursday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
 
With the win, the Cougars improve to 17-7 on the season and advance to a semifinal matchup against No. 2-seed San Diego Friday morning.
 
WSU opened the day by capturing wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to capture the opening point. On Court 3, WSU's Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov won their seventh-straight match and were first off with a 7-5 win over Isabella Marquart and Maria Galatescu. The Cougar pair of Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki clinched the point following a 7-5 win over Nadina Arbaizar Martinez and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic at No. 2. With the doubles point decided, the No. 1 match was abandoned with WSU's Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy deadlocked at 6-6 in a tiebreaker with Portland's Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez.
 
In singles play, the Cougars wasted little time securing the win and they won the first three matches to finish sealing a 4-0 victory. At No. 6, Markov cruised past Galatescu 6-2, 6-0, while Alvarez Sande also posted a straight-set win, 6-2, 7-5, over Rubio Perez at No. 2. Aboulesaad's 6-4, 6-3 win over Marquart at No. 4 secured the team win for the Cougars as the remaining three matches were abandoned.
 
Murphy was trailing 6-4, 1-6, 2-4 to Pethybridge at No. 1, Tse was looking to close out a win, up 6-4, 6-5 against Dimitrijevic at No. 3, and Kanemaki was leading 7-5, 5-2 over Arbaizar Martinez.
 
Play continues at the 2025 WCC Championships Friday as WSU faces No. 2-seed San Diego at 10 a.m. Last Friday, WSU upset San Diego, 4-2, in Pullman.
