Cougars Down Portland, 4-2

PORTLAND, Ore. (April 12, 2025) – Washington State Tennis captured the opening doubles point then senior Hania Abouelsaad completed a three-set win at No. 4 to secure a 4-2 Cougar victory over the University of Portland Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. With the win, the Cougars snap a two-match skid and improve to 14-7 overall, 4-2 in WCC play. The Pilots fall to 7-9, 2-4.
 
With the Cougars leading 3-0 in the match, Portland mounted a comeback, cutting the lead to 3-2 with two matches remaining, both in the third set. Abouelsaad, however, closed out any chance for the Portland upset as she secured the victory with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Isabella Marquart at No. 4, giving WSU a 4-2 lead with one match remaining.
 
Doubles started the day as WSU's No. 3 pair of Abouelsaad and Martina Markov set the stage with a 6-1 win over Maria Galatescu and Isabella Marquart. The duo dropped the first game before winning the next six to claim the win. The Cougars clinched the doubles point as both Courts 1 and 2 finished within minutes of each other to complete the sweep. At No. 2, Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki completed a 6-3 win over Nadina Arbaizar Martinez and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic, while Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy, ranked No. 44 nationally, were finishing a 6-4 win over Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez at No. 1.
 
In singles action, Murphy and Tse extended the lead to 3-0 as Murphy finished first with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Rubio Perez at No. 2, while Tse defeated Dimitrijevic, 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 3.
 
Portland closed the lead to 3-2 as Pethybridge rallied for a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5 win over Alvarez Sande at No. 1 while Arbaizar Martinez completed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Kanemaki at No. 5. The final match at No. 6 was abandoned with the team outcome decided. WSU's Markov was leading Galatescu, 6-2, 4-6, 3-1 before play was stopped.
 
WSU closes out the regular season with a two-match homestand beginning Friday against No. 57 San Diego at 11 a.m.
