Sam Renner shot a 1-under, 71, to lead Washington State Men's Golf during the first day of play Friday at the 2025 El Macero Classic, played at the par 72, 7,127-yard El Macero Country Club.

As a team, the Cougars shot a 9-over, 297 over the first 18 holes and finished the day tied for 12th overall. UC San Diego leads the field at 7-under, 281, one shot ahead of San Diego and two shots in front of Pacific and Saint Mary's.

Renner was solid throughout his first 18 holes, collecting four birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars. His 1-under, 71, places him tied for 16th in the individual standings. Senior Franklin Lyndra ended his first round at 1-over, 73, going one over on the front and even par on the back, finishing in a tie for 32nd. Lydra registered five birdies, four bogeys, a double and eights pars on his day.

Ben Borgida made the turn at 1-over before starting the back nine with a triple and double bogey on two of his first three holes, making him six over through 12 holes. Over his final six holes, Borgida went 3-under, with a birdie on 14 and an eagle on 15 before three more pars saw him end at 3-over, 75, tied for 54th overall. Redshirt-senior
Drayton Joseph completed his first round at 6-over, 78, tied for 73rd overall, while freshman
Tate Bruggeman ended his first 18 holes at 7-over, 79, tied for 79th overall.

Garrett Harrison, playing as an individual, completed his round at 5-over, 77, finishing with six-straight pars to end his day. Harrison is tied for 65th overall.

Second round play at the El Macero Classic continues Saturday, with the Cougars teeing off the back at 9:30 a.m.
