Cougars Sweep San Diego State Behind Cresswell’s Big Day

PULLMAN, Wash. (March 23, 2025)Will Cresswell hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning as Washington State finished off a sweep of San Diego State with a 12-5 victory at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon. WSU won Friday's opener 13-3 in seven innings and Saturday's game two 13-3 in eight innings.

The Cougars (9-14, 4-2 Mountain West) received three hits and career-high six RBI from the senior catcher Cresswell to post their first conference sweep since sweeping Arizona State in Pullman last season. Max Hartman homered for the second straight game, extending his hitting streak to 17 games along the way, while shortstop Gavin Roy collected two hits and scored twice and third baseman Luke Thiele singled twice, walked twice and scored three runs.

Cougar starting pitcher Gavin Derr worked three innings through rainy conditions before freshman righthander Gabe Schneider and junior lefthander Jake Tedesco worked the middle innings. Junior righthander Luke Meyers closed the game with four strikeouts in three scoreless frames to pick up the win.

Both teams traded three-run third innings before SDSU (6-18, 2-4 MWC) scored twice in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead into the seventh before Cresswell's three-run blast put the Cougars ahead.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Hartman gave the Cougars an early lead after leading off the game with an infield single to second base and later scored on a Ryan Skjonsby sacrifice fly to centerfield.

In the third, SDSU scored three runs on three hits, a walk and passed ball to take a 3-1 lead but the Cougars answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. WSU scored three runs after a Johnstone RBI-double, a Creswell RBI-single and a run came across on an SDSU error for a 4-3 lead.

The Aztecs took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth after a leadoff double, a one-out single and a run-scoring sacrifice fly for a 5-4 advantage.

Roy led off the Cougar seventh with a check-swing single to third base that saw him beat the throw at first and he later stole second. Thiele lined a single the other way to right field to put runners on the corners for Cresswell who launched an 0-1 pitch halfway up the trees behind the centerfield fence for the go-ahead homer. One batter later, Hartman hammered a solo homer to right field for an 8-5 lead.

WSU added four more in the eighth on a Cresswell two-run single through the left side before runs came across on a bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded wild pitch.
