Cougar Bats Back Griffin Smith, Beat San Diego State 13-3

PULLMAN, Wash. (March 21, 2025) – Washington State beat San Diego State 13-3 in a game-shortened seven-inning contest at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.

The Cougars collected 15 hits and used a pair of five-run innings to back starter Griffin Smith who worked all seven innings and allowed just three unearned runs while striking out a season-high six to earn the win. Luke Thiele went 4-for-4, Logan Johnstone homered, had three hits and scored three times while Gavin Roy hit his first home run as a Coug.

Eight Cougar hitters collected hits as leadoff hitter Max Hartman singled home a pair of runs in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Ollie Obenour doubled and collected two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 16 while Roy extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Smith was efficient throughout the rainy contest, working around a first-inning jam with a groundout and infield popout to strand a pair of runners. The junior righthander retired eight straight at one point and only allowed a one-out double in the fourth and two-out double in the fifth while holding SDSU scoreless the first six innings.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the second, Johnstone lined a one-out double the other way to left field and moved to third on a flyout before Thiele put down a two-out RBI-squeeze bunt in front of the third baseman for a 1-0 lead.

Smith ended a scoreless fourth with his fifth strikeout before WSU put up five runs in their half of the fourth. Ricco Longo was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning and Johnstone followed with a 424-foot two-run homer to right field. Will Cresswell later added a sacrifice fly to score Roy and two batter's later, Obenour pulled a two-run double to left field for a 6-0 advantage.

In the fifth, the Cougars pushed their lead to 11-0 after an opposite-field two-run home run by Roy and three runs later scored throughout the inning after an SDSU error and two wild pitches.

In the sixth, WSU loaded the bases with three singles before Hartman rolled one back up the middle to extend his hitting streak and drive in two runs. SDSU scored three unearned runs on a pair of Cougar errors in the seventh before WSU ended the game with a 7-6-2 relay throw to the plate to get the Aztec runner and seal the win.
