Hartman’s Big Day Paces Cougs Past Iowa in Texas

CLEBURNE, Texas (February 27, 2025)Max Hartman collected four hits and drove in four runs for Washington State in a 12-7 victory over Iowa at La Moderna Field in Texas Thursday afternnon.
 
Five Cougars scored multiple runs, Luke Thiele stole three bases and six pitchers combined to strike out 10 Iowa hitters in the first of a four game series. Hartman reached base in all five plate appearances, doubled, walked, stole a base and scored two runs. WSU starter Jake Tedesco worked into the fourth inning and struck out a career-high six and Bryce Chambers earned the win in relief with 1.1 scoreless frames.
 
The Cougars built a 6-0 lead with two runs in the first, three in the second and one more in the third before pulling away with a five-run sixth inning. Iowa collected 16 hits but left 14 runners on base while eight Hawkeye pitchers combined to hit five batters
 
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Hartman led off the game with a bunt single in front of the Iowa third baseman before Olle Obenour and Ryan Skjonsby each worked walks to load the bases. Ricco Longo brought home a run with sacrifice fly to right field and Logan Johnstone followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Cougars followed with a three-run second inning after an Obenour RBI-double down the third-base line, Hartman scored on a wild pitch and Skjonsby made it 5-0 with an RBI-single into centerfield. WSU pushed their lead to 6-0 in the third inning after Luke Thiele worked a leadoff walk, stole second on a delayed steal and scored on a two-out RBI-single through the right side by Hartman.
 
Iowa delivered a two-run single in the fourth before Chambers ended the threat with a strikeout, stranding runners on second and third. Chambers followed with a scoreless fifth but the Hawkeyes came right back with two runs in the sixth to cut the Cougar lead to 7-4. In their half of the sixth, WSU blew the game open with a five-run frame capped by a three-run double down the right field line by Hartman.
 
Iowa scored once in the seventh and twice in the eighth but the bullpen received a scoreless ninth from Gabe Schneider to close out the win.
