Yura Nakagawa, along with sophomore
Martina Puvill each posted straight-set singles wins to highlight Washington State's first day of play at the Gonzaga Invitational Friday, played at the Stevens Center.
Playing in the Red Flight, Puvill battled through two tight sets to defeat Utah State's Natalie Paterova, 6-4, 6-4 Also in the Red Flight, WSU's
Chisato Kanemaki's comeback fell short as she dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (3) contest to Utah State's Terezia Mikva.
In the Blue Flight, Nakagawa opened play with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory over Eastern Washington's Veronika Gayevyk, while Morris cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Portland State's Kasumi Hirayama.
In doubles play, both Cougar duos fell in tiebreakers. The pair of Morris and Nakagawa dropped a 7-6 (0) contest to Idaho's Jessica Matthews and Naomi Schraeder, while Puvill and Kanemaki came up just short against Montana State's Nia Gelashvili and Angel Bean, 7-6 (7).
Play continues at the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday.
