Cougar Soccer Handles LMU Lions, 2-0

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's soccer team defeated Loyola Marymount, 2-0, Saturday night at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman. The Cougars (4-5-4) earned their first shutout of conference play with freshman Journey Middleborn and senior Jordyn Young scoring for WSU.
 
WSU controlled the match from the opening whistle, delivering 32 total shots in the match with 10 shots on target. The Cougars broke through in the 29th minute when Middleborn headed home the eventual game-winning goal off a corner kick. Freshman Ava Ghoreishi earned her first career assist, laying the short corner kick back to sophomore Audrey Shackleford for the delivery into the box. Middleborn earned her second-career goal, as the Cougars took a 1-0 lead into halftime, and picked up their third win with a halftime advantage.
 
The Cougars dominated the stats sheet and maintained nearly 55 percent of possession, adding 18 second-half shots to 14 first-half shots. WSU finished with its most shots since tallying 32 shots against Arizona State in 2022.
 
Young added the insurance goal in the 67th minute, floating a shot into the far post from a tight angle. Young's fourth goal of the year also earned freshman Isabelle Wright her team-leading fourth assist.
 
On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper Zora Standifer earned her first Cougar shutout, bringing her career total to 10 shutouts. Standifer made three saves with WSU's defensive unit, including Maggie Mace, Aaya McLyn, Maizy Kluksdal, Alena Watts, Ashle Reese, and Keira Mitchell limiting the Lions to three shots on target.
 
Washington State will have a week's rest before hosting Gonzaga, Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m. The Cougars and Bulldogs will kick off at Lower Soccer Field in Wazzu's annual Pink Game.
