PULLMAN, Wash. (Jan. 17, 2025) – Washington State Women's Tennis picked up a pair of wins over Idaho and Eastern Washington Saturday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The cougars opened the day with a 6-1 win over Idaho followed by a 6-1 victory later in the afternoon against the Eagles.
 
With the wins, WSU improves to 3-0 on the season.
 
IDAHO
Against Idaho, the Cougars captured doubles wins at No. 1 and 3 to clinch the opening point. At No. 2, the match was stopped with the Cougars leading 5-4.
 
In singles play, Maxine Murphy put WSU up 2-0 with a straight-set win at No. 2 over Lena Beckx. Murphy started slow, down a break at 3-5, before winning the final 10 games to complete a 7-5, 6-0 win. At No. 1, Eva Alvarez Sande extended the Cougar lead to 3-0 as she completed a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over the big-hitting Annabel Davis.
 
Hania Abouelsaad needed three sets as she completed the comeback over Hanna Koprowska, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, pushing WSU's lead to 4-0 and sealing the victory. Minutes after Abouelsaad's win, Elyse Tse finished off a three-set victory, winning 6-0, 6-7 (1), 6-1 over Diana Khaydarshina at No. 3.
 
Martina Puvill at No. 5 had no trouble as she finished off Valentina Rodes, 6-1, 6-1 before Idaho picked up its lone win, a 6-2, 6-2 victory by Naomi Schraeder at No. 6 over Chisato Kanemaki.
 
EASTERN WASHINGTON
In similar fashion to the doubles play against Idaho, the Cougars jumped out quick and captured the opening point with convincing wins, this time on Courts 1 and 2. Court 3 was stopped as the point was clinched, with the Cougars leading 4-3.
 
Against the Eagles in singles, Puvill was first off following a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Kenzington Mann. The Cougar freshman is 3-0 in her three dual matches this season. Alvarez Sande followed with her second singles win of the day, this time a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anait Arutiunian at No. 1. Kanemaki moved up to No. 4 for the match and posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kelly Arends, pushing WSU's lead to 4-0 and clinching the team win.
 
Murphy extended the lead to 5-0 as she picked up her second singles win of the day, a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Leandra Nizetic at No. 2. On Court 5, Martina Markov rolled through Zoe Pradel, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win to give WSU a 6-0 lead. The final match came down to a third-set tiebreaker as Sara Vasic defeated Madhu Satishbabu, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 to give EWU it's lone victory.
 
The Cougars are next in action Sunday when they travel to Spokane for a neutral site match against Michigan State. The match will be held at the Stevens Center on the Gonzaga campus at 10 a.m.
