PULLMAN, Wash. (Aug. 30, 2025) – Redshirt-freshman Jack Stevens kicked a 32-yard field goal with three seconds left to lift the Washington State Cougars to a 13-10 win against the Idaho Vandals, Saturday at Gesa Field, giving Jimmy Rogers a win in his head coaching debut for the Cougars.
Making his first career start, WSU quarterback Jaxon Potter threw for 209 yards, completing 24 of 31 attempts, including six completions on the game-winning 9-play, 59-yard drive after Idaho tied the game at 10 with 1:42 left.
After a scoreless first quarter, WSU drew first blood when Potter connected with Josh Meredith for a six-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead, an advantage the Cougars took into halftime.
Stevens' 30-yard field goal extended the Cougars' lead to 10-0 in the third quarter, a score set-up by a Kyle Peterson fumble recovery that gave WSU the ball on Idaho's 18-yard line.
Idaho finally was able to break through in the scoring column on Art Williams 3-yard touchdown run with 7:25 left in the fourth quarter.
After an exchange of drives, Idaho's Matyus McLain forced an Angel Johnson fumble, which was recovered by Idaho's Donovan Parham at WSU's 11-yard line. The Cougars' defense held, and the Vandals settled for the game-tying 21-yard field goal by Cameron Pope.
Defensively, redshirt-senior Caleb Francl recorded a game-high 11 tackles, while redshirt-senior Matthew Durrance and redshirt-freshman Anthony Palano each had nine for the Cougars.
Saturday's matchup was the 94th meeting between the two schools. The Cougars have won 11 consecutive games in the series.
