Cougs Fall at Long Beach State

Long Beach, Calif. (September 20, 2024) – Washington State Volleyball faced Long Beach State Friday night, falling 3-0.

The Cougars (5-4, 0-0 WCC) were led by Katy Ryan's 13 kills to go with two blocks.

Breccan Scheck hit at a .625 clip in the match with five kills on eight attacks, while adding a block.

Sage Brustad also had five kills, while Taryn Vrieling had four.

Italia Bernal led the team with 22 assists, and Emma Barbero tallied seven digs and six assists.

LBSU took an early lead in set one, but the Cougs kept within striking distance. After The Beach moved ahead 11-6, WSU rattled off four straight points with kills from Ryan and a block by Ryan and Scheck to make it 11-9. The Cougars continued to hang around with three more kills late from Ryan, before LBSU won the first set, 25-20.

Ryan kept swinging it in set two with a couple kills to help the Cougs stay even with LBSU. Later, the Cougars went on a 3-0 spurt with another Ryan kill, and a service ace from Sage Brustad midway through the set, but LBSU went on to take the second set 25-14.

In the third set, Ryan and Scheck tallied three kills each, but Long Beach State went on to win the set 25-11, and the match 3-0.

UP NEXT
The Cougars begin WCC play next weekend, opening up at Santa Clara on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. before returning home to face San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 28 at noon. Both matches will be available to watch live on ESPN+.
