Volleyball Drops Apple Cup, 3-1

Seattle, Wash. (September 13, 2024) – Washington State volleyball took on rival Washington Friday night in Seattle, and despite some strong performances, fell 3-1.

The Cougars (3-3, 0-0 WCC) had two in double-digit kills and two who hit .280 or better on the night over the four-set match (15-25, 25-21, 16-25, 13-25).

Sage Brustad recorded a double-double with a team-leading 13 kills and 11 digs to go with a pair of blocks.

Katy Ryan also reached double-figure kills with 10 while hitting .280 on the night with five total blocks.

Lucie Blažková continued to raise her team-best hitting percentage with a .312 performance on Friday with six kills along with three blocks.

Italia Bernal recorded 28 assists to go with a block and a kill.

Taryn Vrieling finished with five points behind two kills and three service aces, and Breccan Scheck tallied four total blocks and a kill.

After falling in set one, the Cougs took an early 4-3 lead in set two. As the score went back-and-forth, a pair of kills from Vrieling and Scheck brought the set to its sixth tie, 10-10. Kills from Ryan, Blažková and Brustad kept the set within a point until a block from Ryan and Scheck put the Cougs on top 17-16. A service ace from Bernal and a UW attack error capped a 5-0 scoring run for WSU, stretching the lead to 19-16, before a Vrieling ace and kills from Brustad sealed the 25-21 set two win.

After UW took an early lead in set three, the Cougars fought back and put together a 6-2 spurt behind kills from Wojdyla, Ryan and Brustad to pull within three, 19-16. UW hung on to win, however, and go up two sets to one.

The Cougs opened set four with the same fight using early kills from Ryan and Brustad to keep things tied, but UW pulled away, eventually winning the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-1.
