EUGENE, Ore. (June 5, 2024) – Washington State senior
Lee Walburn posted three personal-best marks and sits in 11th place following the first five events in the decathlon Wednesday at the 2024 NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Walburn, from Whitefish, Mont., started strong as ran a personal-best time of 10.85 seconds in the 100m, the first event of the day. He followed that with a long jump of 6.50m, 21' 4".
The third event of the day, the shot put, Walburn heaved the shot a career-best 15.00m, 49' 1½ ". It came on his last of three throws and marked the fourth-longest shot of the competition, moving him into seventh place after three disciplines. In the high jump, Walburn cleared a height of 1.89m, 6' 2½ ". The leap kept the Cougar in the top 11 spots heading into the final event of the day.
In that event, the 400m, Walburn concluded his first five events in the same fashion he began, with a personal-best time of 48.40 seconds. The time was more than a second faster than his previous best mark and left him in good position entering Thursday's final day of competition.
Walburn completed his first day with 3,976 points and in 11th place overall. The point total marked his best first day as a Cougar.

The final day in the decathlon begins with event 6, the 110m hurdles, at 11:30 a.m. PT. The remaining events, in order, include the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. Also, the women take to the track and field events for the first time as graduate student
