SAN DIEGO, Calif. (April 7, 2024) – The Washington State women's rowing team had a good final day at the San Diego Crew Classic finishing in fourth twice and sixth once. With much harder competition today, the Cougars did well to stay close to some of the top-ranked crew teams in the country.
"I am proud of what the Cougs were able to accomplish today," said Head Coach
Jane LaRiviere. "The 1V8 had a great race and really built off what they learned yesterday. The 2V8 fought hard, it wasn't their best race today but they showed some grit when it mattered. All in all a good weekend with lots of lessons earned.
The Cougars started the day off with a fourth-place finish in the first varsity eight race, in which they finished with a time of 6:43.121. Washington State stayed in fourth for most of the race with a hard push at the end which put them only a boat's length behind Washington (6:38.272) and about another boat's length in front of Notre Dame (6:47.88). The Cougars improved their time by almost five seconds compared to the qualifying race on Saturday. Texas won the 1V8 in 6:23.27.
The second race of the day for Washington State was the varsity four, in which the Cougs finished in sixth place with a time of 7:56.84. They kept it close to Notre Dame (7:53.37) and Stanford (7:50.17) but ultimately could not pass either of them. Texas won the event in a time of 7:28.05.
Washington State's second varsity eight crew finished in fourth place with a time of 7:15.12 to end its weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic. The race had to be restarted after an issue at the start of the race, but once they got going again the Cougs got off to a good start. The Cougar women stayed relatively close to the top three boats (Texas, Washington, and California) and had a lead on the bottom four boats for the entire race. Texas also won this event with a 6:46.08 finish.
The Cougs will continue their season on April 20 at home against Gonzaga at Wawawai Landing.
