LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2024) –
Eva Alvarez Sande captured both singles matches to highlight Washington State Tennis' first day at the 2024 ITA Sectional Championships, Thursday at Marks Stadium on the USC Campus.
Â
Alvarez Sande, who entered the draw as the No. 5 seed, needed three sets in her first round to defeat BYU's Yujia Huang, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3. The Cougar junior then cruised in her second match, completing a 6-1, 6-3 victory over USC's Maia Sung.
Â
The wins pushed Alvarez Sande into the quarterfinals where she will face UCLA's Elise Wagle, who upset top-seed Kailey Evans of San Diego in straight sets. The winner of that match automatically qualifies for the 2024 NCAA Singles Championship later this month.
Â
Senior
Elyse Tse also competed in the singles draw and started strong, posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Colorado's Mila Stanojevic. In her second match, Tse ran up against one of the top freshman in the country as she dropped a close 6-4, 6-4 contest against UCLA's Kate Fakih.
Â
The ITA Sectional Championships continues Friday with quarterfinal rounds in singles and first round of doubles. WSU will be represented by Alvarez Sande and
Maxine Murphy in the doubles draw.
