Cougs Fall in Corvallis, 3-1

CORVALLIS, Ore. (November 22, 2024) – Washington State Volleyball battled at Oregon State in Gill Coliseum on Friday night, but dropped the match 3-1.

The Cougars (16-9, 11-5 WCC) tallied eight service aces and won set two, hitting .290 as a team.

Sage Brustad finished with 12 kills and a service ace, and Katy Ryan had nine kills and four blocks.

Taryn Vrieling ended the night with eight kills, four service aces and three digs.

Lucie Blažková totaled five kills, three blocks and an ace, while Breccan Scheck had four kills while hitting .429 to go with a team-high five blocks.

Italia Bernal tallied 20 assists, an ace and a block, Jaden Walz had 12 assists, five digs and an ace, and Emma Barbero put up 14 digs and three assists.

Weronika Wojdyla recorded a kill and two blocks.

After falling in a tight set one, the second set saw more back-and-forth play as kills from Vrieling and Blažková helped keep things even at 8-8. A Blažková ace and a couple of OSU errors put WSU ahead 11-9 before a pair of Ryan kills and a Blažková solo block extended the lead to 15-11. A Vrieling ace and a block assist from Scheck and Wojdyla kept WSU out in front, and then a kill and an ace from Walz brought up set point, setting the stage for a block assist from Scheck and Ryan that sealed the set two win, 25-20.

OSU took a 2-1 lead after set three, and the Cougars worked to even things in the fourth set as a Brustad ace and kills from Ryan, Blažková and Bernal locked the score at 5-5. From there, though, a 10-2 spurt from the Beavers gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish, as they went on to win the set 25-13, and the match, 3-1.
