SEATTLE, Wash. – Washington State Women's Tennis captured two singles and one doubles match to open play at the Husky Invitational Friday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
In singles action, the Cougars faced Denver University and came away with two wins. Senior
Elyse Tse and freshman
Martina Puvill accounted for the two victories. Tse had no trouble in defeating Louise Wilkander, 6-2, 6-1, while Puvill needed three sets to get past Claudia Martinez de Velasco, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. Junior
Yura Nakagawa was about to split sets against Andra Burguete Beltran when she was forced to retire due to injury.
Denver captured the remaining three matches in straight sets.
In doubles play, Puvill and
Chisato Kanemaki posted a 6-4 win over Washington's Zehra Suko and Carina Syrtveit, while the Husky pair of Sophie Luscher and Catherine Gagnon escaped with a 6-4 win over WSU's
Hania Abouelsaad and
Martina Markov. The Cougar pair of Tse and
Madhu Satishbabu dropped a close, 6-4, decision to Iowa's Pia Kranholdt and Nikita Vishwase.
Play continues Saturday at the Husky Invitational, with the Cougars facing Washington and Seattle U in singles, and Seattle U in doubles. Play gets underway at 9 a.m. at the Seattle Tennis Club.
